Ocean Charter School has full- and part-time teaching positions available in Fall 2008.

We are looking for talented and committed teachers to join our group of dynamic educators at one of the most innovative public schools on the west side of Los Angeles.

First Grade Class Teacher

This is a position for someone who is gifted with children and seeking to work with the imagination and will of students, as well as their intellect. It is also a position that continues with same students through consecutive grades as a part of a loop. Other desired qualities include musical ability, talent for storytelling, and interest in adapting state standards to a Waldorf-methods curriculum.

Fourth Grade Class Teacher

This individual should possess: A zeal for the challenge to bring the rich Waldorf curriculum to life while meeting state learning standards; a desire to instruct contextually and bring art experience everyday to the classroom; an appreciation for ancient mythologies and cultures, as well as scientific inquiry; and a commitment to teach to diverse learning styles. This teacher continues with the students through consecutive grades as a part of a loop. Our ideal candidates for Class Teacher have Waldorf training and experience, as well as California State certification, as our curriculum offers a blending of both approaches. We are also interested in individuals with either a California credential or Waldorf training who are willing to complete additional training and credentialing as a requirement of the job.

Our 2008-2009 salary schedule for full-time considers responsibility, qualifications and experience with salaries commensurate with surrounding districts. We offer full benefits, including a teacher retirement plan through the State of California.

Spanish Teacher Grades 1-8

We are looking for a teacher to provide Spanish language education in complement to our Whole Child Curriculum, based on Waldorf teaching methods. Experience in teaching elementary and middle school-age children with meeting the developmental needs of each grade is a requirement. Knowledge of songs, games, and stories and cultural celebrations, as well as exercises in speaking, reading, and writing is fundamental for this position.

Kindergarten Assistant

This part-time position is for an individual interested in working with children in a play-based, full-day kindergarten, assisting the Lead Teacher in establishing and maintaining a rhythm and routine that facilitates the imaginative play of children. Duties and tasks include: the supervision of independent play, modeling of productive work (e.g. ironing, bread-making), participation and support in circle time (singing, finger games, movement), recess and lunch supervision, preparing for naptime, and cleaning and tidying the classroom. Multi-tasking is essential. Familiarity with the Waldorf kindergarten curriculum is a plus.
